Description

Every Summer the Buddhist Church would put on the Bon Odori or Obon Festival to commemorate the souls of those who have died. The festival would be held in front of the Buddhist Church on O Street in between Fourth and Fifth Streets and would consist of dancing, music, and singing that would go all day and into the night. Even though Bon Odori is a Buddhist holiday all members of the Japanese community would come together to celebrate. After World War II the Obon Festival was brought back with the help of the Sacramento Japanese American Citizens League and various churches from the area to help reinvigorate the Japanese community in Sacramento and the festival still continues to be celebrated at the Buddhist Church today.

Geraldine Nakano is the only one to be identified from this photograph and she is the very last girl in the procession.
