Description

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 some people protested by going out and unofficially changing the name of Japan Street located in the Embarcadero. One month after the bombing the streets committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to change the name of Japan Street to Colin P. Kelly Street in honor of the war hero who was the first B-17 Bomber pilot to die in the war.

The first image is of a unidentified man who sought to change the name of Japan Street the day after Pearl Harbor.
The second image is of Committee member Miss. Beneke who went to check how the new name would look on the sign but saw that people had previously painted over the name.
